Intensive 10-Day Hands-On Masterclass with Rehearsals, Performance & Video
The 5th Annual Vratsa Conducting Summer Masterclass (VCSM) is an intensive program focussing on providing meaningful orchestral podium time to allow for conductors to analyse, develop, assimilate and refine their ideas and gestures unique to their styles. Conductors work with a full time professional orchestra enabling them to gauge a real world orchestral response to their directions. The Masterclass begins on the podium with optional preparatory piano sessions* before the bulk of the podium time in extensive rehearsals with full orchestra.
The Masterclass is limited to 15 selected participants and refines conducting skills with professional orchestra in Symphonic Repertoire and the more specialized area of Opera Arias. Conductors will work closely with conducting faculty, 20 minutes podium time each day and streamed rehearsal video for immediate analysis/feedback and in class video seminars.
The Masterclass concludes with conductors performing in one concert (see Timeline below) which will include a professional video recording of each performance.
To preserve the highest artistic standards and ensure meaningful individual development, a maximum of 15 active participants will be admitted. This guarantees exceptional podium time and a truly personalized experience with the orchestra.
The Selection Committee reserves the right not to fill all available places if the required artistic level is not met.
Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, with priority given to early submissions. Given the limited number of places and the highly competitive selection process, interested conductors are strongly encouraged to apply as early as possible.
Auditors/observers are welcome to attend all rehearsals, classes and concerts to gain a deeper understanding of the artistic process and can register on the Application form below.
*Preparatory Piano sessions are optional but recommended at an additional cost of €100 / per 50 min individual session / per participant.
The Vratsa Conducting Summer Masterclass is the official Conductor Development Programme of the Vratsa Symphony Orchestra.

This is our fifth year (formerly known as the Conducting Summer Programme, European Academy of Fine Arts (EAFA)), with alumni going on to lead orchestras worldwide.

Christo Pavlov
Christo Pavlov is a renowned name in Bulgaria's musical life and is Music Director of the Vratsa Symphony Orchestra. He is a laureate of national and international competitions as a flutist, composer, and conductor. He has conducted numerous ensembles, including the Czech Philharmonic, Moravian Philharmonic Orchestra Olomouc, Sibiu Philharmonic Orchestra, Pitesti Philharmonic Orchestra, Craiova Philharmonic Orchestra, The Symphony Orchestra of the National Theater “Claudio Santoro” – Brasilia, Thüringer Symphoniker, Dublin Philharmonic Orchestra, The Symphony orchestra and choir of the Bulgarian National Radio, Sofia Philharmonic Orchestra, European Recording Orchestra, Chamber orchestra “I Sedici”, International Chamber Orchestra of the MOZARTMANIA Festival (Spain), International Chamber & Symphony Festival Orchestras of the “Sofia Music Weeks” International Festival, orchestra and choir of the State Music Theater – Sofia, orchestra and choir of the Varna State Opera, Pleven Philharmonic, Pazardzhik Symphony Orchestra, Sofia Metropolitan Orchestra, Opera Nova orchestra, The Youth orchestra of the Classic FM Radio amongst them.He is Assoc. Prof. in the National Academy of Music "Prof. Pancho Vladigerov" in Sofia.
Malcolm Yuen
Australian conductor, Malcolm Yuen has appeared with leading orchestras and soloists throughout Europe and Australasia including the National Symphony Orchestra Ireland, RTÉ Concert Orchestra (Ireland), Queensland Symphony Orchestra, Bohuslav Martinu Philharmonic Orchestra and is a strong advocate of new works by emerging and established composers. His performances have been broadcast on ABC FM (Australia), RTÉ Lyric FM (Ireland), German and Bulgarian television and Network GTV Nine Australia. A regular guest conductor with the Vratsa Symphony Orchestra, with over 30 years in the education sector, he was the Founding Program Director in Conducting at the European Academy of Fine Arts in 2025.
ORCHESTRA
The Vratsa Symphony Orchestra is a prestigious professional ensemble known for its dynamic performances and commitment to artistic excellence presenting in excess of 70 performances each year. Participants will work intensively with these dedicated musicians in a collegial environment.

Hemus Spa Hotel is located in the center of Vratsa, on the central square of Hristo Botev. Situated between the Vratsa Theater and Municipal Philharmonic Hall, the Hotel Hemus is the perfect home base for participants to attend rehearsals and concerts. Close to the historical landmarks of the city, the shopping area and administrative institutions, the Hemus Hotel has an indoor pool with a jacuzzi, 2 saunas, 2 aroma steam baths and much more.
(Accommodation is not included in Tuition cost. Participants are responsible for their own travel and accommodation expenses.)
Travel: The nearest airport is Sofia (SOF). For an additional cost, we can assist with arranging transport from the airport.
HOW TO APPLY
Applications will be processed as they are received. Once the Active Participants places are filled, further applications will be held on a wait list. Once Active Participants have been accepted, a non-refundable deposit of €500 will be required to guarantee a place.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
A €500 deposit is required and non-refundable on successful acceptance of an application. The €500 enrolment deposit is subtracted from the total tuition amount of the enrolling conductor.
Tuition is fully refundable if the conductor cancels prior to May 31, 2027.
If a conductor cancels, for any reason, on or after May 31, 2027 (GMT+2), the tuition is non-refundable.
Remaining tuition amounts from enrolled conductors are due before May 31, 2027. The Vratsa Conducting Summer Masterclass reserves the right to cancel any conductor's participation if tuition is not paid in full prior to this date. In this event, tuition paid up until this date will be refunded, less the non-refundable deposit.
Accommodation is not included in the tuition cost.
Please note that there is no airport in Vratsa. All flight tickets should be booked into and out of Sofia Airport, Bulgaria (SOF).
